The basic idea of the prototype model is that instead of starting on a development project based on system requirements documentation alone, with no way to visualize the product, a clickable prototype is developed based on the currently known requirements. The prototype looks and feels like an actual application, only that it is really only a number of screens linked together, that mimic the functionality of an actual application. Using a prototype, the user can see if the application was designed as they envisioned or if there are changes or additions needed. Once the prototype is final, the user can now shop for quotes for development with a clearly scoped and highly defined project.

Prototyping six step model

  1. Requirements gathering and analysis: functional and non-functional requirements are broken out in detail
  2. Quick design: quick wireframes or paper prototypes are built
  3. Prototype building: an initial prototype produced, based on wireframes
  4. User evaluation: strengths and weaknesses of the prototype revealed by usability testing
  5. Refinement: the prototype is refined based on new requirements and user feedback. At this stage, the prototype can go through evaluation and reiteration as many times as necessary
  6. Product build: on meeting of requirements and needs, it’s time to get developing
