Feature iteration before writing code saves costly mistakes

Prototyping Specialist

What

Introduction

The basic idea of the prototype model is that instead of starting on a development project based on system requirements documentation alone, with no way to visualize the product, a clickable prototype is developed based on the currently known requirements. The prototype looks and feels like an actual application, only that it is really only a number of screens linked together, that mimic the functionality of an actual application. Using a prototype, the user can see if the application was designed as they envisioned or if there are changes or additions needed. Once the prototype is final, the user can now shop for quotes for development with a clearly scoped and highly defined project.

Why

Advantages of Prototyping

  1. Since in this methodology a working model of the system is provided, the users get a better understanding of the system being developed.
  2. Errors can be detected much earlier.
  3. Quicker user feedback is available leading to better solutions.
  4. Missing functionality can be identified easily.
  5. Confusing or difficult functions can be identified.
  6. Enables requirements validation of the application.
  7. A prototype can be used to better determine the value of a project before spending large sums on development.
  8. Cost effective way of developing a powerful presentation to raise capital for a concept.

How

Prototyping six step model

  1. Requirements gathering and analysis: functional and non-functional requirements are broken out in detail
  2. Quick design: quick wireframes or paper prototypes are built
  3. Prototype building: an initial prototype produced, based on wireframes
  4. User evaluation: strengths and weaknesses of the prototype revealed by usability testing
  5. Refinement: the prototype is refined based on new requirements and user feedback. At this stage, the prototype can go through evaluation and reiteration as many times as necessary
  6. Product build: on meeting of requirements and needs, it’s time to get developing

Conclusion

Let's do this!

Prototyping is an attractive idea for a custom software or a mobile app project for which there is no existing system to help with determining the requirements.
